　　Once upon a time, there was an old farmer who planted a plot of rice. After he planted the seedlings, every day he went to the field to watch the seedlings grow. He saw the young shoots break through the soil and grow taller each day, but still, he thought they were growing too slowly. Eventually he got impatient with the young plants and suddenly he hit upon an idea that one by one, he pulled up the young plants by half an inch. The next early morning, the young man couldn’t wait to check his “achievement”, but he was heart-broken to see all the pulled-up young plants dying.

　　拔苗助長

　　從前，有個(gè)農(nóng)夫，種了稻苗(seedlings)后，便希望能早早收成。每天他到稻田時(shí)，都發(fā)覺那些稻苗長得非常慢。他等得很不耐煩。想了又想，他終于想到一個(gè)“最佳方法”，他將稻苗全都拔高了幾分。第二天，一早起身，他迫不及待地去稻田看他的“成果”。 哪知，卻看到所有的稻苗都枯萎了。

　　Making His Mark

　　A man from the state of Chu was taking a boat across a river when he dropped his sword into the water carelessly. Immediately he made a mark on the side of the boat where the sword dropped, hoping to find it later. When the boat stopped moving, he went into the water to search for his sword at the place where he had marked the boat. As we know, the boat had moved but the sword had not. Isn’t this a very foolish way to look for a sword?

　　刻舟求劍

　　楚國有個(gè)人坐船渡江時(shí)，他不小心把自己的一把寶劍掉落江中。他馬上掏出一把小刀，在寶劍落水的船舷上刻上一個(gè)記號(hào)。船靠岸后，那楚人立即從船上刻記號(hào)的地方跳下水去撈取掉落的寶劍。他怎么找得到寶劍呢?船繼續(xù)行駛，而寶劍卻不會(huì)再移動(dòng)。像他這樣去找劍，真是太愚蠢可笑了。

　　A group of penguins at a zoo in Japan take a walk to lose weight.

　　從前有一個(gè)農(nóng)民每天在地里辛苦勞作。一天他正在耕地時(shí)聽到撞擊聲;他看到一只兔子躺在樹旁。他撿起一看是一只肥大的兔子，他自言自語地說：“既然這么容易撿到兔子，為什么我要整天辛苦勞作呢?”他扔掉鋤頭，每天躺在樹邊，夢(mèng)想有兔子來。當(dāng)他最終意識(shí)到他的愚蠢返回地里時(shí)，他發(fā)現(xiàn)他的稻谷全死了。

　　這個(gè)故事告訴我們，我們不能等著機(jī)會(huì)和運(yùn)氣帶來的不可預(yù)料的收獲，也就是說，我們希望不勞而獲。

　　One day, Tom is bathing in a river. He doesn’t swim well and will be drown. He calls out loud for help. A man is just passing by. It is dangerous to bath in the river.” “Oh, yes sir,” cries the boy, “ Please help me out and scold me afterward.” Counsel without help is useless.

　　有一天，湯姆在河里洗澡。他不太會(huì)游泳。眼看就要被淹死，他大聲呼喊救命。有個(gè)人正好從旁邊經(jīng)過，他沒有幫助小男孩，卻是站在旁邊對(duì)小孩子說道：“ 你怎么這么草率!在河里洗澡很危險(xiǎn)?！薄芭叮壬?，”小男孩喊叫：請(qǐng)你還是先把我救起來后再責(zé)備我吧。” 只有忠告而不給予幫助是無濟(jì)于事的。
